Rockies grab wild card lead

The Colorado Rockies have battled all the way back from their sluggish start to head to the front of the pack in the wild card race.

The team has finally put itself in first place in the wild card race, which is critical considering how the Los Angeles Dodgers are running away with the National League West.

The Rockies rattled off a long win streak earlier in the summer and have been really hot for the past two months.

Improved starting pitching and the re-emergence of Todd Helton at the plate has helped to carry Colorado.

Marquis hopes for solid second half

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Jason Marquis has been in this position many times before.

He gets the season off to a great start only to fade after the All-Star break for inexplicable reasons.

The right-hander is not thinking about the past now and is convinced things will be different this year.

He has already taken a step in the right direction, going eight strong innings in his first start post All-Star break.

Rockies making up ground going into All-Star break

After a sluggish start to the season, the Colorado Rockies used a long winning streak to climb back above .500.

The Rockies are currently sitting at 47-41 and in third place in the National League West.

Colorado sits well behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants.

While they are playing much better of late, Colorado’s only real playoff hope is to win the wild card race.

Rockies getting quality starting pitching

For the Colorado Rockies, starting pitching has been the downfall of their franchise ever since their inaugural season.

Lately, however, it has been one of the strengths of the team. The starting rotation recently came within just one inning of recording three straight complete games.

For Colorado, one complete game is a near miracle, much less having almost three in a row.

The team has been on a tear since their sluggish start out of the gate and has climbed right back into the thick of the wild card race thanks to improved pitching and some timely hitting.

Rockies can’t shake Dodgers

The surging Colorado Rockies would be well above the .500 mark if it wasn’t for those pesky Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Rockies are now just 1-8 on the season against the Dodgers but 39-27 against everyone else.

The hot Colorado club has a chance to make up some more ground though with a three-game series against those Dodgers.

The Dodgers will still be without Manny Ramirez, which gives the Rockies a slight advantage.
